Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) measures your blood pressure automatically over a 24-hour period as you continue your normal daily activities. It provides a more complete picture of your blood pressure throughout the day and night than a single reading taken during a clinic visit.
Why has my doctor referred me for ABPM?
Your GP has likely referred you for ambulatory blood pressure monitoring to diagnose, manage and monitor high blood pressure or if treatment is effective.

What’s Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring do?
A small monitor is connected to a blood pressure cuff worn on your upper arm and records your blood pressure over a period of 24 hours.
The monitor automatically measures your blood pressure every 15-30 minutes during the day and every 30-60 minutes overnight. You can continue with most of your daily activities as usual while you wear the monitor.
After the monitoring period, you return the device to the clinic for specialist analysis. A report will then be provided to your referring doctor to support your ongoing care.

Yes. The monitor continues recording your blood pressure overnight, to provide valuable information about how your blood pressure changes during sleep. You may notice the cuff inflating when you are sleeping.
White coat hypertension is when your blood pressure is higher during a medical appointment than it is during your normal daily activities. ABPM can help determine if your blood pressure remains elevated outside the clinic.
Masked hypertension is when your blood pressure appears normal during a clinic visit but is higher at home or during your day-to-day. ABPM helps detect changes over a 24-hour period for a clearer understanding.
Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring is bulk billed for eligible patients with a valid Medicare card and referral.
