HeartBug® is an advanced wearable heart rhythm monitor that continuously records your heart’s electrical activity for up to 28 days. The extended period helps detect intermittent heart rhythm abnormalities that may not appear with standard ECG or Holter monitoring.
Why does my heart need extended monitoring?
Your GP may recommend HeartBug monitoring if your symptoms occur infrequently or further investigation of your heart rhythm is required for:
- Infrequent palpitations
- Unexplained dizziness
- Fainting episodes
- Suspected atrial fibrillation
- Intermittent chest discomfort
- Assessment following a stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA)
What to expect during HeartBug Monitoring
An inconspicuous and adhesive monitor is comfortably worn on your chest and continuously records your heart rhythm as you continue your everyday activities.
You will be asked to record when and if symptoms occur using an event button or symptom diary that is provided. This gives your cardiologist the ability to compare your symptoms with your heart rhythm at the time they happened.
When the monitoring period is complete, you’ll return the device to the clinic for specialist analysis and a report will be provided to your referring doctor.

A Holter monitor usually records your heart rhythm for between 24 to 48 hours. HeartBug monitoring can record continuously for up to 28 days, making it more likely to detect heart rhythm abnormalities that happen less frequently.
HeartBug is lightweight and designed to be comfortable for extended wear and to be worn discreetly beneath your clothing while you go about your normal daily routine.
If you experience symptoms such as palpitations, dizziness or chest discomfort, record them using the event button or symptom diary provided. This helps your cardiologist compare your symptoms with your recorded heart rhythm. If symptoms are severe, please seek urgent or emergency care.
HeartBug monitoring can help detect atrial fibrillation and other intermittent heart rhythm abnormalities that might not show up during a standard ECG or shorter monitoring period.
