Electrocardiography (ECG)

Recording your heart's electrical rhythm

An electrocardiography (ECG) test is a simple and non-invasive way to record the electrical activity of your heart. At Aydin Cardiology in Dandenong, we use this investigation to help identify heart rhythm issues such as arrhythmias and conduction abnormalities. Mapping these signals helps our team detect underlying heart disease and other cardiovascular conditions.

What to expect during an ECG

An ECG test only takes a few minutes and is performed by our specialist team. Small sensors (electrodes) are placed on your chest, arms and legs to monitor the electrical signals of your heart while you rest. The procedure is non-invasive and painless.

Once the recording is complete, our cardiologist reviews the signals and discusses the results with you. If the investigation identifies any concerns, he can provide immediate specialist guidance or a management plan. A detailed report is then sent to your referring doctor to support your ongoing care and follow-up consultations.

What an ECG detects

An ECG helps our team investigate concerns including:

  • Atrial fibrillation and other irregular heart rhythms
  • Signs of previous or current heart stress
  • Delays in the heart’s electrical conduction
  • Effects of high blood pressure on the heart muscle
  • Monitoring the impact of certain medications

When is an ECG recommended?

A GP will usually request an ECG when patients report symptoms that suggest a change in heart rhythm. This test is a primary investigation for those experiencing palpitations, dizziness, chest discomfort or shortness of breath.
