Echocardiography (Heart Ultrasound)

Capturing images of the heart

An echocardiogram, also called an “echo,” is a non-invasive ultrasound of the heart. It uses sound waves to create detailed images of your heart in real time, so your cardiologist can assess how your heart looks and functions.

Why have I been referred for an Echocardiogram?

Your doctor may recommend an echocardiogram to monitor an already known heart condition or if you are experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Palpitations or irregular heartbeat
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart murmurs
  • Swelling of the legs

What to expect during an Echocardiogram

An echocardiogram test is non-invasive and usually takes 30-45 minutes. One of our trained cardiac sonographers will place an ultrasound probe on your chest to capture images of your heart. No needles, radiation or special preparation are required.

Your images will be reviewed by a cardiologist and any identified concerns will be communicated promptly with specialist guidance. A detailed report will also be sent to your referring doctor to support your ongoing care and follow-up consultations.

What does an Echocardiogram assess?

An echocardiogram provides important information to your cardiologist about:

  • Heart pumping function (ejection fraction)
  • Heart muscle thickness and strength
  • Heart valve function
  • Enlargement of heart chambers
  • Fluid around the heart (pericardial effusion)
  • Congenital heart abnormalities
  • Pulmonary pressures
